UK BBFC ratings: 12A, 12, 15 and 18
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) distinguishes cinema’s 12A from home entertainment’s 12. The A matters when taking a child under 12 to the cinema.
Scope: UK cinema and video age categories
BBFC categories
| Rating | What it means |
|---|---|
| U | All ages, though not necessarily made for children |
| PG | General viewing, some scenes may concern children |
| 12A | Cinema: under 12 only with an adult |
| 12 | Under 12 cannot rent or buy the video |
| 15 / 18 | Minimum cinema admission and video purchase ages |
| R18 | Adults only, specially licensed venues and shops |
Does a 12 rating rule out sex or nudity?
No. BBFC’s 12 guidance permits brief, discreet sexual activity and sexual nudity. Language depends on context and frequency. Read the title’s content advice instead of treating 12 as a promise that a particular theme is absent.
